@payten Hello, During your pregnancy, you need to adjust your diabetes management plan. Blood sugar levels that stay high during pregnancy may cause your baby to grow too large (macrosomia) or harm the early development of organs and lead to birth defects. Women who have type 1 diabetes can have a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby, but it’s important to monitor diabetes that could worsen throughout pregnancy, such as high blood pressure, vision loss, and kidney disease. Other risks include Preeclampsia, Insulin resistance, Miscarriage, and Macrosomia. Women with type 1 diabetes can breastfeed their babies. Having diabetes may delay your ability to produce breast milk at first, but it should improve over time. Breastfeeding is an energy-consuming activity, just like physical activity. Careful planning and attention to your medical needs give you the best chance to stay healthy during pregnancy and have a healthy baby. Thank You!!

Type-1 diabetes patient with high-level sugar in the morning. Is it because of the Somogyi effect or the dawn phenomenon?

@sahen Hello, diabetes medication may need adjusting. Distinguishing between the Somogyi effect and dawn phenomenon is important, as it may indicate how the medication needs adjusting. Considering that no notable low blood sugar incidence during the night occurs with the dawn phenomenon, you may need additional medication timed to lower their morning levels. The treatment would be different if the Somogyi effect was evident. In this case, it may indicate that the medication needs adjusting to prevent an episode of hypoglycemia during the night. The only way to prevent this is to keep blood sugar levels stable through effective glucose management. Adjusting the timing of insulin administration, lowering the dose of insulin before bed, changing the type of insulin, eating a snack with the evening insulin dosage, and changing lifestyle. Thanks!

@ha Hello, Yes excessive thirst is a symptom of diabetes. Excessive thirst is one of the first signs that you might have diabetes. Thirst and having to urinate too often are both caused by too much sugar in your blood. You should look out for other symptoms like red, swollen, or tender gums, slow healing, weight loss. Talk to your doctor as excessive hunger and thirst are the symptoms of diabetes and get him tested. Thank You.

@ramon Hello, as he is only 11 years old I would suggest you to limit his junk food instead of completely cutting it off. People with diabetes have a higher risk of developing heart disease. Because of that, it's good to steer your child away from fatty foods that contain cholesterol, saturated fat, and trans fat. Avoid foods high in salt. Eating too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure. Limit sugary foods like candy, cookies, frosting, or soda that raise blood sugar quickly. They’re best given at a meal and with insulin. You'll adjust insulin based on carb counting. Keep a record of your child’s carb intake, insulin doses, and blood sugar readings. Thank You.
