Hello, my mother is a 69-year-old woman, is looking for something to relieve her stuffy nose. She has been suffering from a head cold for the past few days and that the congestion has been so unbearable when lying down she has been unable to sleep comfortably. She has a medical history that includes anxiety, fibromyalgia, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, for which she is taking an antidepressant, a beta-blocker, a pain reliever (gabapentin), and a statin. For treating her nasal symptoms, she would prefer to avoid all medications, if possible, but is unsure of what natural products would provide relief. If anyone has any advice, please do share.

@Awanish Both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment options can be used to provide supportive care and to help relieve symptoms, such as nasal congestion, associated with the common cold. In your mother's case, considering her preference for avoiding drug therapies, the pharmacist could recommend adequate hydration, particularly with warm liquids; administration of an intranasal saline, by either a nasal spray or a teapot; proper nutrition; upright positioning during sleep, either by elevating the head of her bed or using pillows to support nasal drainage; and using a humidifier or a vaporizer. Medical device strips, such as Breathe Right nasal strips, designed to mechanically open blocked nasal passages when applied externally to the clean, dry skin of the bridge of the nose, are another nondrug option for alleviating her nighttime congestion. Finally, use of topical application of aromatic oils, such as camphor, eucalyptus, and menthol, may help provide symptom relief without the potential for interaction with her other health conditions or medications
