Women with inflammatory arthritis (IA) are more likely to use healthcare services than men, a Canadian study found. The results suggest there are biological differences in disease course and sociocultural differences in healthcare access and patient behavior among the sexes, Sanjana Tarannum said in a presentation at The Lancet Summit: Sex and gender in rheumatology conference in late September.

    • Low-Protein Nordic Diet Promotes Healthy Eating in Infants

Infants who were introduced to a low-protein diet – high in fruit, vegetables, and roots – ate more fruits and vegetables at 12 and 18 months of age, compared with those who ate a conventional diet, in a new study. The "Nordic diet" has shown health benefits in children and adults, but has not been studied in infants, said Ulrica Johansson, MD, of Umeå (Sweden) University, in a presentation on the study at the annual meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.

    • RE: A Role for Sitting in Brain Health?

@papiya Fluid abilities such as processing speed and memory, problem solving, and reasoning tend to decline as people age. On the other hand, "crystallized" abilities — particularly vocabulary — tend to improve, possibly because people acquire more knowledge and experience as they move through adulthood.

    • Ankle Impingement Syndrome- treatment options?

Ankle impingement is defined as a painful mechanical limitation of full ankle range of motion secondary to an osseous or soft-tissue abnormality. Soft-tissue impingement lesions of the ankle usually occur as a result of synovial or capsular irritation secondary to traumatic injuries, infection, or rheumatologic or degenerative disease states. Ankle impingement syndromes may also be congenital in origin. The leading causes of impingement lesions are posttraumatic injuries, usually ankle sprains, leading to chronic pain. Involved areas may include the anterolateral gutter, syndesmosis, and posterior ankle regions.

    • RE: FDA Okays 6-Month Implanted Eversense CGM for Diabetes!!

@anurup Data from the pivotal PROMISE trial of the 6-month version were presented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions in 2021, as reported by Medscape Medical News. An older 6-month wear time version (Eversense XL) has been available in Europe since 2017. The new second-generation 6-month system is currently under regulatory review there. The PROMISE trial included 181 participants with diabetes, about two thirds with type 1 and one third with type 2 diabetes, at eight clinical research sites. The Eversense E3 consists of a fluorescence-based sensor, a transmitter, and a smartphone app that displays glucose values, trends, and alerts. The sensor is inserted subcutaneously into the upper arm by a certified healthcare professional in a brief office procedure. The transmitter is placed on the skin on top of the sensor. Glucose data are sent to the app automatically every 5 minutes.

    • RE: I get excessive burping after taking vitamin tablets, what is the cause behind?

@snigdha Encapsulated fish oils (commonly consumed to increase omega-3 fatty acid intake) may be more likely to cause vitamin burps. Gelatin capsules may cause more burping and gastrointestinal issues than others. Vitamins that make you burp might be a sign to switch to another vitamin or brand. But before you throw out that bottle and buy a new one, if you notice burping, try a smaller dose. Or split up the dose so you take half in the morning and half at night. Choosing supplements (like fish oil) that are lemon or mint flavored can also make the burps more tolerable.

    • RE: Please recommend some medicines to remove tan

@snigdha Ancient Ayurveda texts claim Turmeric, Saffron, Sugar, and nut-based oils to be excellent healers of skin tanning. In this article, we’ll talk about simple tan removal home remedies that you can use to remove tan from your body. Whether you are suffering from the tan due to strolling around the city or relaxing at a beach destination for days together, these natural home remedies will help in sun tan removal. Lemon juice has a bleaching effect, which helps in removing tan quickly. It contains Vitamin C in abundance, which is a great tan removal agent. The citric acid present in lemon helps in the removal of acne and lightening of the marks. Soak a cotton ball in fresh and organic coconut milk and dab it all over the face. Leave it on till it’s absorbed into the skin or dries completely. Wash it off with a mild cleanser.

    • RE: Role of personalized medicine??

@papiya If there is one overarching trend to all the advances in medical technology, it is the personalization of medicine and treating individuals as such. While this is occurring at several levels, it is most readily apparent in biotechnology and pharmacology. One area of application is pharmacogenomics, which is seeing rapid development as a possible method of abating the opiate crisis in America. Scientists and doctors can study an individual’s likely responses to drugs and doses and select personalized regimens accordingly so that they avoid some of the dangerous side effects of overprescribing a scheduled drug. The second application is in RNA-based therapeutics, which seeks to “interfere” with genetic data at the RNA level and intercept a genetic abnormality before it gets translated into functioning (or non-functioning) proteins. The more successful methods of personalized RNA therapy (e.g., antisense nucleotides and RNA interference) are looking to combat rare genetic conditions such as Huntington’s Disease, neurologic disorders, and forms of cancer.
