@navika Muscle can contract mechanically — [the concept of the] shivers — thereby generating heat, and there is considerably more muscle than brown fat in a human, so shivering can burn more calories and produce more heat

Combined Intranasal Allergic Rhinitis Treatment Better Than Monotherapy
Combination intranasal corticosteroid (INCS) and intranasal antihistamine (INAH) therapy appears to be a more effective treatment for allergic rhinitis (AR) than INCS monotherapy, according to results of a systematic review and meta-analysis.

High Social Media Use May Fuel ADHD in Teens
Heavy use of texting, video chatting, and social media may contribute to the onset of symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in youth, new research suggests. Among a large group of adolescents who did not have symptoms of ADHD at baseline, frequent use of digital media was found to be associated with the emergence of new ADHD symptoms.

CDC Warns Monkeypox Cases Will Continue to Grow
Monkeypox cases are expected to continue to climb in the coming weeks, the CDC says. This likely spike in cases is from increased testing for monkeypox that's due to a more streamlined monkeypox case reporting system; more infections from monkeypox exposures; and a higher number of people seeking monkeypox tests, Rochelle Walensky, MD, the director of the CDC, said during a Friday media call.

RE: Probiotics Reduce Allergic Rhinitis in Children and Adults
@kukum Kang and his colleagues assessed 84 adults who had received a diagnosis of perennial allergic rhinitis at least 2 years prior. They randomly assigned 41 adults to NVP-1703 at a dose of 1 × 1010 CFU plus maltodextrin 2 g/day. The other 43 adults, who served as the control group, were assigned to maltodextrin 2 g/day.

Irregular Periods in Many Young Women May Mean Late Pregnancy Detection
Nearly one in three women ages 18 to 24 have irregular menstrual cycles, which may mean pregnancies could be caught much later than the six-week abortion limit in Texas, a new study finds. An analysis of menstruation data from nearly 270,000 U.S. women revealed that more than one in five women experience irregular periods. Percentages were higher among younger women, Hispanic women, and those with common health conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome and diabetes, researchers said in a report released by PNAS and scheduled for publication in that journal.

RE: How to treat endometriosis?
@kukum Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial tissue in an ectopic location outside of the uterus, and can be prevalent in around 10–15% of all menstruating women. The most common site for endometriosis are the ovaries and uterosacral ligaments. Although the aetiology is unknown, the Sampson’s retrograde menstruation theory of endometrial tissue reflux through the fallopian tubes and intra-abdominal visceral implantation and growth, is the most widely accepted. This oestrogen-dependent disorder can result in significant morbidity with chronic pelvic pain, multiple operations and infertility. Those affected are also at a higher than population-risk of developing ovarian cancer and potentially breast and other cancers. Endometriosis usually becomes more apparent during the patient’s reproductive years.

RE: Chronic bronchitis- how to recover?
@digbijay Pulmonary histoplasmosis in asymptomatic patients is self-resolving and requires no treatment. However, once symptoms develop, such as in our above patient, a decision to treat needs to be made. In mild, tolerable cases, no treatment other than close monitoring is necessary. However, once symptoms progress to moderate or severe, or if they are prolonged for greater than four weeks, treatment with itraconazole is indicated. The anticipated duration is 6 to 12 weeks total. The response should be monitored with a chest x-ray. Furthermore, observation for recurrence is necessary for several years following the diagnosis. If the illness is determined to be severe or does not respond to itraconazole, amphotericin B should be initiated for a minimum of 2 weeks, but up to 1 year. Cotreatment with methylprednisolone is indicated to improve pulmonary compliance and reduce inflammation, thus improving work of respiration
