    • RE: Hyperparathyroidism and emotions

@ahmed-hussain I have diagnosed 1.5 yrs ago and had one gland removed 1 yr ago I suffered from high blood pressure, anxiety and osteopenia before surgery after surgery my blood pressure dropped dramatically 2 weeks after removal of the gland, allowing me to eliminate one medication and cut the other in half...my bone loss was reversed and gaining bone mass back anxiety is better

make sure you have an experienced surgeon with lots of experience removing these tumors. this is very important as an inexperienced surgeon could do more harm

most symptoms are completely reversible hope this helps

    • RE: What is the role of anxiety in the pathophysiology of burning mouth syndrome (BMS)?

@awanish The pathophysiology of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is not understood. It was originally considered a psychogenic illness; however, a neuropathic mechanism for burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is currently favored. This is based on objectively measured abnormalities of physiologic responses of the trigeminal nerve in burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients. There is also evidence to suggest histopathologic changes in nociceptive fibers in BMS patients. The differentiation between a peripheral versus a central etiology has not been determined.

    • RE: Dance Training 'Drastically' Reduces Parkinson's Progression, Eases Symptoms

@awanish PD is a neurodegenerative disease associated with progression of motor dysfunction within the first 5 years of diagnosis. The annual rate of motor decline, as determined with the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS), is between 5.2 and 8.9 points. Prior studies that assessed various styles of dance by patients with PD showed beneficial effects regarding gait speed, balance, locomotion, and aspects of quality of life. To investigate further, DeSouza and co-author Karolina Bearss, a PhD candidate at York University, followed 16 patients with mild to moderate PD who participated in a weekly dance class at Canada's National Ballet School and Trinity St. Paul's church. Dance for Parkinson's Disease, which is an established dance curriculum, involves aerobic and anaerobic movements. The protocol begins with a seated warm-up, followed by barre work, and ends with moving across the floor. All participants learn choreography for an upcoming performance.

    • Do Personality Traits Predict Cognitive Decline?

Extraverts and individuals who are disciplined are less likely to experience cognitive decline later in life, whereas those with neuroticism have an increased risk for cognitive dysfunction, new research shows. Investigators analyzed data from almost 2000 individuals enrolled in the Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP) — a longitudinal study of older adults living in the greater Chicago metropolitan region and northeastern Illinois — with recruitment that began in 1997 and continues through today. Participants received a personality assessment as well as annual assessments of their cognitive abilities. Those with high scores on measures of conscientiousness were significantly less likely to progress from normal cognition to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) during the study. In fact, scoring an extra 1 standard deviation on the conscientiousness scale was associated with a 22% lower risk of transitioning from no cognitive impairment (NCI) to MCI. On the other hand, scoring an additional 1 SD on a neuroticism scale was associated with a 12% increased risk of transitioning to MCI.

    • RE: Researchers Investigate Whether Apps May Aid Weight Loss

@anup It is unlikely that apps will be able to replace the human touch. Digital helpers have advantages, however. Apps can help a lot, particularly with self-observation and questions such as, "How much am I actually eating and how often am I moving?" In this way, they can support weight loss. In addition, the data collected in the apps can be useful for enabling nutritional experts to give targeted feedback or to conduct long-term care.

    • Intermittent Fasting Good for Weight Loss, at Least Short Term

The health benefits of intermittent fasting are slowly being clarified as more evidence continues to emerge, say the authors of a new review of 21 studies. Initial findings suggest that fasting might be effective for mild to moderate weight loss for certain groups of people, at least in the short term. The trials so far have only been conducted in adults — generally with overweight or obesity and sometimes hypertension, dyslipidemia, and/or diabetes — but some have been performed in those of normal weight. Those with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or other comorbidities, or patients who need to take medications with meals at certain times of the day, should seek clinical supervision when considering intermittent fasting.

    • Allergic Conjunctivitis: Cold Compress Helps Other Treatments

Allergic conjunctivitis signs were reduced most effectively by a cold compress (CC) combined with artificial tears (ATs) or epinastine hydrochloride (EH) drops, according to a randomized, masked clinical trial of 18 individuals allergic to grass pollen. A total of 18 participants were exposed to grass pollen in an environmental chamber to cause an ocular allergic reaction. They received ATs, CC for 5 minutes, ATs and CC combined, or no treatment randomly at each separate visit. Of those 18 participants, 11 also received either EH drops alone or with CC in random order or the same volume of saline drops. EH is a dual-action antihistamine–mast cell stabilizer.

    • Pathophysiology of Binge Eating Disorder (BED)?

Binge eating disorder (BED) was first characterized in 1959 by Stunkard as the presence of recurrent episodes of binge eating. BED can also include night eating with resultant weight gain but by definition does not include the use of vomiting or medications such as laxatives, emetics, or diuretics.

    • RE: Why collagen is so important in human life?

@anup Collagen is a hard, insoluble, and fibrous protein that makes up one-third of the protein in the human body. In most collagens, the molecules are packed together to form long, thin fibrils. These act as supporting structures and anchor cells to each other. They give the skin strength and elasticity. There are at least 16 different types of collagen, but 80 to 90 percent of them belong to types 1, 2, and 3. These different types have different structures and functions. The collagens in the human body are strong and flexible. Type 1 collagen fibrils are particularly capable of being stretched. Gram-for-gram, they are stronger than steel.

    • RE: What should we do to prevent Omicron infection?

@nimmy Typically when an atypical case in a patient (of Covid-19) is observed, the samples are sent for sequencing, just to see why it is behaving differently. It could be that the patient reacted very severely, there is a sudden spike in cases, or the patient may have some other illness and the symptoms are showing slightly different. One such variant that has been identified as Omicron. Theoretically vaccines in India like Covaxin and Covishield will be quite effective against omicron variant as well. In case of double vaccinated people, cases of serious infections and mortality should be low. In populations that are unvaccinated, there are chances that mortality might be high but based on what we know about Omicron, it only seems to be causing mild infections, so the chances of it (being as deadly as second wave) really are 50-50 in unvaccinated.
