    • New CDC Guidance on Prescribing Opioids for Pain

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released updated and expanded recommendations for prescribing opioids for adults with acute and chronic pain not related to cancer, sickle cell disease, or palliative/end-of-life care.

The 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline provides guidance on determining whether to initiate opioids for pain; selecting opioids and determining opioid dosages; deciding duration of initial opioid prescription and conducting follow-up; and assessing risk and addressing potential harms of opioid use.

    • New Treatment Promising for Borderline Personality Disorder

Adding individualized therapy to a short version of a good psychiatric management model improves mood, emotional control, and some interpersonal skills in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), although it does not appear to further reduce borderline symptoms, a new study shows.

    • RE: Exercise Plus Cognitive Training Boosts MCI Improvement

@nupur A possible explanation for the finding is that patients who are doing both cognitive training and physical exercise simultaneously might not be able to focus enough on either task to do get the maximum benefit.

    • RE: Hypothyroidism: No More Wait to Eat or Drink With Liquid Thyroxine?

@sulagna Findings from two bioavailability studies showing no difference in comparisons of Thyquidity (levothyroxine sodium oral solution, Vertice Pharma) with or without waiting periods before consuming coffee or a high-fat meal were presented at ENDO 2022, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, by Vertice Pharma Medical Director Kris Washington, PharmD. And just last month, similar data were published in Thyroid for another levothyroxine oral solution, Tirosint-SOL (IBSA). No difference in pharmacokinetic properties were found with this product with a shorter versus a longer waiting period before consuming a high-fat meal.

    • RE: Lipid Levels Tied to ALS Risk

@moupiya They may help build a biochemical picture of what's going on and who might be at risk of developing ALS in the near future, particularly in people with a genetic predisposition to ALS. ALS is a disorder of progressive degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons. Genetic variants account for fewer than 15% of cases. The factors that are associated with the greatest risk are unclear. To investigate, the researchers used data from the UK Biobank, a prospective cohort study of persons aged 39–72 years. Participants underwent an initial assessment between March 2006 and October 2010 and were followed for a median of 11.9 years. In addition to providing demographic and health information, participants provided blood samples for biochemical analysis. This included measurements of total cholesterol, HDL, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, apoA1, apolipoprotein B (apoB), A1c, and creatinine.

    • Stress, Depression During Pregnancy Can Harm Child

New evidence points to the importance of helping mothers with their mental health during pregnancy. Researchers from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, have found that feelings of stress or depression while pregnant are linked to changes in the placenta where the child is growing. The findings, published in Epigenomics, show these changes could alter gene activity. Stress and depression are not uncommon among expectant women, with depression affecting an estimated 1 in 10 pregnancies, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

    • Vitamin D Supplements Cut Risk for Autoimmune Disease in VITAL!

I'd like to talk about recent promising research from the vitamin D and omega-3 in the prevention of autoimmune diseases (VITAL) trial, recently published in The BMJ . Vitamin D 2000 IUs daily and marine omega-3 fatty acids 1 g daily in a study population of more than 25,000 US adults were applied who were older than age 50 years and were treated for more than 5 years. The main goals were the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease, including autoimmune diseases.

    • RE: Causes behind recurrent nasal polyp?

@dikshita Scientists don't yet fully understand what causes nasal polyps, why some people develop long-term inflammation, or why irritation and swelling (inflammation) triggers polyps to form in some people and not in others. The swelling occurs in the fluid-producing lining (mucous membrane) of your nose and sinuses. There's some evidence that people who develop polyps have different immune system responses and different chemical markers in their mucous membranes than do those who don't develop polyps. Nasal polyps can form at any age, but they're most common in young and middle-aged adults. Nasal polyps may form anywhere in your sinuses or nasal passages, but they appear most often in an area where sinuses near your eyes, nose and cheekbones all drain through winding passages into your nose.
