Long-Term Steroids in RA Linked to Increased Cardiovascular Risk
Each month of glucocorticoid use in middle-aged patients with rheumatoid arthritis increases their odds of a major adverse cardiac event by 14%, independent of their baseline cardiovascular risk, according to a Veterans Administration study presented at the virtual annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology. A similar study of Medicare and insurance claims data also presented at the meeting similarly found a dose-dependent increase in cardiovascular risk with long-term glucocorticoid use among patients with RA.

'Playing Pool' Is New Approach to Dislodge Kidney Stone Fragments
Ultrasound technology that moves small, lingering kidney stones toward the ureter to avert episodes of pain or additional surgery may be ready for US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval next year, researchers report. RE: Sedentary Postmenopausal Women Have Higher Heart Failure Risk
@analava After controlling for multiple variables including age, race, education, income, smoking status alcohol use, menopausal hormone therapy, and hysterectomy status, the researchers found that patients in the second tertile for sedentary behavior had a significantly increased heart failure risk than patients in the first tertile for sedentary behavior. This risk was even greater for patients falling in the third tertile for sedentary behavior. Odds ratios were 1.00 (referent), 1.15, and 1.42 for the lowest to highest tertiles for total sedentary behavior, respectively, and 1.00 (referent), 1.14, and 1.54 for sitting (P < .001 for both total sedentary behavior and sitting only).

RE: New Strategies for Preventing and Healing Diabetic Foot
@sajjan Podiatric prevention consists of trying to stop the occurrence of an ulcer for patients at risk, most often those with peripheral neuropathy. Bourron presented a pair of devices that work together to detect areas of the foot at risk even before the ulcer occurs.

RE: Time-Restricted Eating May Reduce CVD Risk After Breast Cancer
@rukmini-nair This approach is easy for patients to follow and is much simpler than many of the other dietary patterns, noted Kirkham. It simply consists of having a start time or end time to your eating, so it is easy to prescribe. You can see how that is much easier for a doctor to explain to a patient than trying to explain how to meet the physical activity guidelines each week.
