@debraj Among the side effects associated with hydroquinone products reported to the FDA are skin rashes, facial swelling, and skin discoloration or ochronosis. The discoloration can be permanent

    • Low-Sodium Diet Did Not Cut Clinical Events in Heart Failure Trial

A low-sodium diet was not associated with a reduction in future clinical events in a new study in ambulatory patients with heart failure. But there was a moderate benefit on quality of life and New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class. The results of the SODIUM-HF trial were presented today at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2022 Scientific Session, conducted virtually and in-person in Washington, DC. They were also simultaneously published online in The Lancet. The study found that a strategy to reduce dietary sodium intake to less than 1500 mg daily was not more effective than usual care in reducing the primary endpoint of risk for hospitalization or emergency department visits due to cardiovascular causes or all-cause death at 12 months.

    • RE: Vegetarians Have Better Cholesterol Levels, and More, Than Meat-Eaters

@ashma Health is complex and individual markers tell you just part of the story. Vegetarian diet can be nourishing but cautioned that "just because someone excludes meat from their diet does not mean necessarily that they will be eating a healthy diet. Some of the biomarker differences seen in this work — such as the lower concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, GGT [gamma-glutamyl transferase], and ALT [alanine transaminase] — are indicators that the vegetarians were healthier than the meat-eaters. However, other differences were less encouraging, including the lower concentrations of vitamin D and higher concentrations of triglycerides and cystatin-C

    • Urticaria: An Elusive Disorder With 'a High Unmet Need for Treatment

In the clinical experience when patients present with acute urticaria, the culprit is usually food, a drug, or a bug. But in some cases, the trigger remains elusive. The basic rule is to treat patients to clearance and keep them clear. Chronic urticaria is characterized by plaques with a burning/itch sensation that often "move" to different locations on the body over minutes to hours, and they typically last for less than 24 hours. The plaques are often oval, round, or irregular in shape and they typically leave no post-inflammatory pigmentary alteration or scarring other than from scratching

    • RE: Genomic Analysis Reveals Possible Role of AMH in PCOS Infertility

@debraj The researchers used ovarian cortical xenografts with cotransplantation of engineered endothelial cells to examine the effect of chronic paracrine AMH stimulus on human folliculogenesis. They cotransplanted human ovarian cortex with control or AMH-expressing endothelial cells in immunocompromised mice and recovered antral follicles for purification and subsequent analysis. Overall, 38 antral follicles were observed (19 control and 19 AMH) at long-term intervals, defined as intervals greater than 10 weeks. The researchers found that long-term xenografts showed an accelerated growth rate in the setting of chronically elevated AMH and exhibited a molecular signature indicative of more advanced stages of follicle maturation, including that of luteinization.

    • RE: New Contact Lens Elutes Antihistamine for Ocular Allergy

@debraj Antihistamine eyedrops are contraindicated for use with contact lenses because eyedrop preservatives could interact with the lenses, and clinical trials generally exclude contact lens wearers. In contact with the eye, the drug diffuses from the lens into the tear film and is absorbed by the ocular tissues, much like a conventional eyedrop.

    • Two Factors Linked to Higher Risk of Long COVID in IBD!

Two features are significantly associated with a higher risk for developing long COVID symptoms among people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), according to a large Danish population study. People with Crohn's disease (CD) who experienced adverse acute COVID-19, defined as requiring hospitalization, were nearly three times more likely to report persistent symptoms 12 weeks after acute infection. Long-term, persisting symptoms following COVID-19 is a frequently occurring problem, which is probably underappreciated. IBD specialists should therefore be aware of any of these symptoms and actively ask patients whether they have these problems.

    • RE: How can I reduce my addiction for shopping?

@anwesha Compulsive buying disorder” is the proposed diagnosis for shopping addiction. It’s a worldwide problem, and approximately 5.8% of the U.S. population will experience some type of compulsive buying disorder during their lives. Many people who suffer from shopping addiction also experience a co-occurring mental health condition, such as anxiety or depression. Some people engage in addictive shopping to boost their self-esteem. While the term “shopaholic” is often used in jest, it is a serious condition as people who shop compulsively generally spend well beyond their means. Shopping addiction is a process addiction. Process addictions are addictions to things other than physically addictive drugs or alcohol. Tell your loved ones about your problem and ask them to help you in your recovery.
Write a shopping list AND stick to it.
Avoid things like online stores or TV shopping channels. Ask a loved one to block these sites and channels on your computer, phone, and television, and then secure the password to unlock these items.
Whenever you feel the urge to shop, acknowledge it, and then do something constructive such as exercise, or take up a hobby that does not require you to spend.

    • RE: What causes bad breath, how to manage ?

@mina The mouth is home to hundreds of bacterial species with various nutritional preferences. These organisms usually enjoy proteins, and as they digest proteins several fetid substances arise. The role of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in producing bacteria that colonize over the tongue was recently understood as a main cause of halitosis (bad breath). The most common VSCs, such as methylmercaptan and hydrogen sulfite, can be detected by using organoleptic and objective methods, which can identify and localize the source. In people with rigorous oral hygiene, good dentition and a healthy periodontium, the main cause of bad breath (halitosis) is likely to be the back of the tongue. Saliva plays a big role in bad breath (halitosis) elimination. Bad breath (halitosis) levels during the day are inversely related to saliva flow. The best way to treat bad breath (halitosis) is to instill patients with good oral hygiene practices. Although patients often balk at using dental floss, compliance improves once the connection is made between flossing and fresh breath (eg, just by asking the patients to smell their own floss following each passage). Many people continue to have malodor of oral origin, even after carrying out oral hygiene practices. In such instances, rinsing and gargling with an efficacious mouthwash may be advised. Keep in mind, however, that many mouthwashes contain components that may have a nonbeneficial effect on oral soft tissues (eg, alcohol, sodium dodecyl sulfate, strong oxidizing agents). The best time to use a mouthwash is probably before bedtime because the residue of the mouthrinse may remain in the mouth for a longer period of time and have a greater effect and because the bacterial activity leading to bad breath (halitosis) is greatest during the nighttime, when saliva flow is practically zero and microbial activity is highest.Other methods to reduce halitosis (bad breath) include changes in diet (reducing substrate for VOC production), especially in a high-protein diet. Preventing the drying of the oral mucosa by hydration and stimulation of salivary flow can improve oral malodor (halitosis) due to the presence of lysozymes in saliva, causing inhibition of bacterial growth.
