    • RE: Obesity: A 'Double Hit' in Pregnant Women With Heart Disease

@raima The findings are concerning given the rising prevalence of obesity worldwide. National data from 2018 show that slightly more than half of women who gave birth in the United States were significantly overweight or obese before becoming pregnant. Similarly, in the present analysis of 600 women in the CARPREG study who gave birth from 2004 to 2014, nearly 1 in 5 pregnancies (19%) occurred in women with obesity and 25% were in overweight women.

    • AI Uses Nocturnal Breathing Patterns to Detect Parkinson's Disease

An artificial intelligence (AI) model can detect Parkinson's disease (PD), assess its severity, and track its progression using nocturnal breathing signals, new research suggests. In a large dataset study, the model accurately distinguished persons with PD from those without the disease with both high sensitivity and specificity. It also recognized persons with PD before they had received an actual diagnosis.

    • Can Green Tea Extract Protect Against Colorectal Adenomas?

Green tea extract (GTE) does not appear to protect against colorectal adenoma recurrence, according to a study from Germany. Preclinical, epidemiologic, and small clinical studies have suggested that GTE and its major active component, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), have antineoplastic effects in the colon and rectum.

    • RE: FDA Proposes Ban on Menthol Tobacco Products

@riya In response to concerns that Black communities would be over-policed amid a menthol cigarette ban, Califf emphasized that any FDA enforcement actions would be aimed at manufacturers of menthol cigarettes and cigars, not people who buy the products. The European Union, Canada, Brazil, Ethiopia, and Turkey have already banned menthol in cigarettes. One study estimates that if the same menthol ban had begun in the United States last year, overall smoking rates in the country would decline by 15% as early as 2026. This drop would eventually lead to a 5% reduction in smoking- and vaping-related deaths by 2060, according to the study, which translates to 650,000 lives saved.

    • New Combination Med for Severe Mental Illness Tied to Less Weight Gain

Olanzapine plus samidorphan (Lybalvi) vs olanzapine alone is associated with less weight gain while achieving similar clinical outcomes in patients with recent-onset severe mental illness, new research suggests. However, least one expert says the weight difference between the two drugs is of "questionable clinical benefit." Last year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug for the treatment of adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder, as a maintenance monotherapy or as either monotherapy or an adjunct to lithium or valproate for acute manic or mixed episodes.

    • RE: Financial Strain Tied to Increased Mortality After Myocardial Infarction

@srabanti While a limitation of the study is the potential for confounding by unmeasured illness severity, the magnitude of the mortality difference suggests assessment of financial strain may identify a unique subset of older adults at elevated risk following an MI

    • RE: Pathophysiology and etiology of bedbug bites?

@riya The mechanism of skin injury by arthropods depends on the structure of the mouthparts. These insects are categorized as vessel feeders if they insert the tip into a capillary or as pool feeders if they feed on the extravasated blood from damaged tissue. They often inject different pharmacologically active substances (eg, hyaluronidase, proteases, kinins), which may cause different skin reactions (eg, erythema, wheal, vesicle, hemorrhagic nodule).
Bedbugs can be seen anywhere, but they tend to occur in environments in disarray. Old furniture makes an excellent home for bedbugs. These insects also like to hide in the seams and folds of mattresses and in bed frames and springs.

    • RE: How to manage pyloric stenosis?

@srabanti Surgery called pyloromyotomy treats pyloric stenosis. After diagnosing pyloric stenosis, your surgeon will discuss the surgery with you. It’s a safe surgery. Infants with pyloric stenosis often have dehydration because they vomit so much. Your provider will make sure your baby is properly hydrated before performing surgery. Your baby will probably need fluids through an IV which will be given at the hospital. A blood test to test hydration may be taken during this time to make sure it’s improving. Your child won’t be able to have milk or formula starting six hours before surgery. Keeping them off these fluids reduces the risk of vomiting and aspiration (breathing in vomit) while under anesthesia.

    • RE: How to improve hair growth and quality?

@rupsha While genetics play a key role, your diet, the weather, pollution, and your overall approach to hair care are all critical to maintaining your crowning glory. Find out how a healthy diet and proper care can keep your mane a head above the rest. A well-rounded diet is an important factor in hair and scalp health. Hair is primarily made up of protein, so be sure to eat at least 45 grams of protein daily. Good sources include: lean meat, poultry, fish, beans, low-fat dairy products and eggs. Diets with inadequate protein can result in weak, brittle hair and loss of hair color, as well as loss of hair itself.
