    • Early Estrogen Loss Increases Cardiovascular Risk in Women

The relationship between estrogen levels and heart health makes it particularly important for clinicians to be aware of those patients who might be at risk for cardiovascular disease despite not having other traditional risk factors, according to a presentation Oct. 12 at the North American Menopause Society annual meeting in Atlanta.

    • RE: Physical Activity Linked to Lower Mortality in Parkinson's Disease

@abhishikta Those who reported vigorous activity three or more times per week or moderate or light activity five or more times per week were considered physically active. Otherwise, they were considered physically inactive. To quantify the total amount of physical activity, researchers calculated the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) minutes per week by summing the frequency, intensity, and duration of activity. They categorized the total amount into quartiles.

    • Adults May Also Be Experiencing Depression Because of Social Media Use, Study Suggests

The negative emotions stemming from teens' involvement with social media have been grabbing the headlines. But adults may also be experiencing depression because of their use of social media, suggests a new study. Use of social media has been linked to increased anxiety and depression, as well as reduced well-being in adolescents and young adults, but similar associations in older adults have not been well studied, and longitudinal data are lacking, Ron H. Perlis, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, and colleagues wrote in their paper, which was published in JAMA Network Open. To examine the association between social media use and depressive symptoms in older adults, the researchers reviewed data from 13 waves of an internet survey conducted each month between May 2020 and May 2021. The survey respondents included individuals aged 18 years and older, with a mean age of 56 years. In the study the researchers analyzed responses from 5,395 individuals aged 18 years and older, with a mean age of 56 years. The study participants had minimal or no depressive symptoms at baseline, according to scores on the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9).

    • A Role for Sitting in Brain Health?

Sitting may not always be bad for the brain and, in fact, may benefit cognition, new research suggests. Although physical activity in seniors is beneficial for overall health, the new study suggests that being sedentary may benefit certain cognitive capacities, as long people are also sufficiently physically active. Investigators found that daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was associated with better fluid abilities, including perceptual speed and reasoning, while more sedentary time was associated with better performance on tests of vocabulary knowledge as well as reasoning.

    • Why Dermatologists Should Support Artificial Intelligence?

Dermatologists should embrace AI and drive how it is utilized – be the captain of the plane (technology) and the passenger (patient). In 2019, a group of German researchers found that AI can improve accuracy and efficiency of specialists in classifying skin cancer based on dermoscopic images. Current research involves using supervised learning on known outcomes to determine inputs to predict them. In dermatology, think of identifying melanoma from clinical or dermoscopic images or predicting metastasis risk from digitized pathology slides.

    • Red Eye Is Common, but Can Be Indication of Serious Disease!

The proper management of red eye, a common affliction seen in emergency departments and doctor's offices, involves the separation of common, trivial symptoms from less common, but often serious symptoms. Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is detectable in about one-third of COVID-19 patients, according to a 2020 Chinese study. Eye symptoms usually appear in the first 3 days after a person is infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can be the first symptoms a patient experiences, and can be mild. For asymptomatic patients and those with mild infection, the risk for transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus through tears is minimal but increases significantly for patients who require intensive care. In addition, red eye has become more common during the pandemic because people's screen habits have changed and because masks can cause dry eyes by directing breath upward. Young people are more commonly affected by this, which we did not see very often previously.

    • RE: Can I have nonveg during this time of pandemic?

      @bidhan
Coronavirus is a respiratory infection which spreads through droplets transmitted in the air. There is no specific connection as to how the novel coronavirus or any virus can stay on chicken, meat or seafood and make it unfit for consumption. The same goes for eggs. Just because the virus originated from a poultry market in Wuhan, China, it doesn't mean you have to give up on non-vegetarian, dairy, or poultry produce. For one, the family of coronaviruses need a host (human) to latch and develop on to and simply cannot grow in food. Hence, it is always suggested that any meat or poultry should undergo a thorough cooking process (minimum of 30 mins) to kill most germs and illness-causing viruses. The same methodology was found to effective in killing the SARS virus, which is similar to the COVID-19

    • RE: Self care to manage vertigo?

@bidhan Depending on what's causing your vertigo, there may be things you can do yourself to help relieve your symptoms. Your GP or the specialist treating you may advise you to:
do simple exercises to correct your symptoms
sleep with your head slightly raised on two or more pillows
get up slowly when getting out of bed and sit on the edge of the bed for a minute or so before standing
avoid bending down to pick up items
avoid extending your neck – for example, while reaching up to a high shelf
move your head carefully and slowly during daily activities
do exercises that trigger your vertigo, so your brain gets used to it and reduces the symptoms (do these only after making sure you won't fall, and have support if needed)
