Open-source automated insulin delivery systems appear to be both effective and safe in adults and children, new research finds. Automated insulin delivery (AID) system, also known as closed-loop systems or an artificial pancreas, link an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) with an algorithm that automatically adjusts insulin delivery to optimize glycemic control. Prior to the availability of commercial AID systems, Dana Lewis, a patient with type 1 diabetes, and her partner co-developed an algorithm that could link older versions of an insulin pump and CGM.

One Third of Dementia May Be Preventable With Lifestyle Change
More than one third of global dementia cases may be preventable by addressing nine lifestyle factors that affect an individual's risk, according to the findings of a new comprehensive report from The Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention, and Care. The report, presented today at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) 2017 and simultaneously published in The Lancet, was compiled by 24 international experts in the field of dementia who reviewed the available literature in the field and conducted a new meta-analysis that included some risk factors not considered in previous similar analyses.

RE: 'Voice Biomarker' Shows Progress in CAD Risk Assessment
@trina Earlier research demonstrated significant associations between the same or similar voice biomarkers, or the separate constituent voice signal features, and baseline CAD, pulmonary hypertension, and, in patients with heart failure, mortality and risk for hospitalization. But the current study is the first to use the voice-analysis techniques to prospectively forecast CAD events, Sara observed. The voice biomarker it tested was derived — using proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) methods (Vocalis Health) — from voice signals from more than 10,000 patients with chronic diseases, he noted. The resulting algorithms were developed to analyze 80 voice-signal features, such as frequency, amplitude, pitch, and cadence. Patients in the current study, who had been referred for coronary angiography for various indications — including angina-like chest pain, a positive stress test, hospitalization with ACS, or preoperative evaluation — each provided three 30-second voice recordings that were processed for the distinct voice signal features.

Poor Diet Linked to Nearly Half of Cardiometabolic Deaths
A substantial proportion of deaths in the United States due to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes is associated with suboptimal diet, a new study suggests. The largest number of diet-related cardiometabolic disease (CMD) deaths are related to high sodium intake, followed by low intake of nuts/seeds, high processed meats, low seafood omega-3 fats, low vegetables, low fruits, and high sugar-sweetened beverages, the researchers found.

RE: Can Caffeine Help Tackle Obesity via Brown Fat Activation?
@tiash The results, published by Scientific Reports on June 24, show that coffee drinking was followed by significant increases in temperature in the supraclavicular region relative to the body surface temperature. This is the first study in humans to show that something like a cup of coffee can have a direct effect on our brown fat functions. The potential implications of our results are pretty big, as obesity is a major health concern for society, and we also have a growing diabetes epidemic, and brown fat could potentially be part of the solution.

RE: Ramsay hunt syndrome- what is this and how to treat?
@tanisha The most common treatments for Ramsay Hunt syndrome are medications that treat the virus infection. Your doctor may prescribe famciclovir or acyclovir along with prednisone or other corticosteroid medications or injections. They may also recommend treatments based on the specific symptoms that you have. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or antiseizure medications like carbamazepine can help reduce the pain of Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Antihistamines can help with vertigo symptoms, such as dizziness or feeling like the room is spinning. Eye drops or similar fluids can help keep your eye lubricated and prevent cornea damage. You can treat a shingles rash at home by keeping the rash clean and using a cold compress to minimize pain. You can also take over-the-counter pain medications, including NSAIDs like ibuprofen.

RE: How to manage menstrual pain?
@snigdha It’s common to feel discomfort around your abdomen, lower back, and thighs when you’re menstruating. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the primary over-the-counter (OTC) form of pain relief recommended for menstrual pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. NSAIDs include ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve). These drugs help lower your body’s production of prostaglandin. NSAIDs are not as effective as oral contraception at lowering prostaglandin, but they can help reduce pain. Massage therapy for menstruation involves pressing specific points while the therapist’s hands move around your abdomen, side, and back.

Why antihistamines cause sedation?
Hi, I was suffering from cough and cold. I was prescribed cough syrup and anti histaminic drug. I was feeling drowsy all the time after taking the medicine. Is it the side effect of antihistamines? Do they cause sedation? I have stopped taking them as I am better now. So I am not feeling any sleepiness. I would like to know why antihistamines cause sedation.
