    • C-CHANGE Updates Cardiovascular Disease Guideline

The Canadian Cardiovascular Harmonized National Guideline Endeavour (C-CHANGE) has updated its guideline for preventing and managing cardiovascular disease in primary care.

Of the 83 recommendations in the latest guideline, more than half (48) are new or have been revised. The document recommends that clinicians suggest pedometers and smartphone apps as means of encouraging patients to exercise more, promote water as the beverage of choice, encourage a reduction or elimination of alcohol intake, and promote smoking cessation.

@anshu Use of the decision-support risk calculator for thromboembolism in the IMPROVE-DD VTE trial significantly boosted use of appropriate inpatient thromboprophylaxis starting at hospital admission by a relative 52%, and significantly increased outpatient thromboprophylaxis prescribed at discharge by a relative 93% in the study's two primary endpoints, Spyropoulos reported at the American Heart Association scientific sessions.

    • RE: Gout App Improves Treat to Target, Reduces Flares

@prem Patients in the intervention group who recorded a urate level above 0.30 mmol/L (5 mg/dL) via the app during the study were prompted to do a self-test every 2 weeks and given daily reminders in the app. Their urate levels were transmitted securely to the study team who then advised on dose escalation or treatment change. Those in the usual-care group also used the app but it only prompted them to record gout flares, keep quality of life diaries, or message the researchers.

    • As the Data Show, Medical Abortion Is Safe

In 2020, medical abortion accounted for only 31.9% of voluntary termination of pregnancy (VTP) procedures in Italy. This finding comes from the most recent Ministry of Health report on the implementation of Law 194 of 1978. Data show that Italy's percentage of medical abortion is significantly lower in comparison with other countries in Europe. For example, in France and England, medical abortion is used in more than 70% of VTPs, and in Nordic countries, it is used in more than 90%.

    • Neurologic Symptoms Frequent in Nonhospitalized COVID Long-Haulers

Cognitive dysfunction tops the list of neurologic complaints in long-haul COVID-19 patients whose illness wasn't severe enough for them to be hospitalized, but it isn't the only problem, new research shows.

    • Albuminuria Linked to Higher CVD Risk in Diabetes

Fewer than half the adults in Denmark with type 2 diabetes in 2015 had a recent assessment for albuminuria, and those who underwent testing and had albuminuria had a greater than 50% increased rate of incident heart failure, MI, stroke, or all-cause death during 4-year follow-up, in a study of more than 74,000 Danish residents. Even those in this study with type 2 diabetes but without albuminuria had a 19% rate of these adverse outcomes, highlighting the "substantial" cardiovascular disease risk faced by people with type 2 diabetes even without a clear indication of nephropathy, Saaima Parveen, MD, a cardiology researcher at Herlev and Gentofte University Hospital in Copenhagen, said at the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology.

    • RE: More Nuts Improve Men's Orgasmic Function, Sexual Desire

@debayan None of the possible mechanisms explored (nitric oxide and E-selectin, as surrogate markers of endothelial function) seem to explain the beneficial effects observed on orgasmic function and sexual desire.

    • Could We Phenotype Mass Killers and Prevent Murder-Suicides?

Criminology and criminal justice professors Jillian Peterson and James Densley, funded by the National Institute of Justice, compiled life histories of 180 American mass public-place shooters since 1966 and all mass shootings in schools, workplaces, and places of worship since 1999, in their 2021 book The Violence Project: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic. They identified shooter characteristics: male, early childhood trauma (violence in the home, sexual assault, parental suicide, extreme bullying), hopelessness, despair, isolation, self-loathing, rejection by peers, previous suicide attempts. Self-hate turned outward to blame a group: a race, a religious congregation, women, school classmates. A quest for fame, notoriety, or a desire to perform a copy-cat act — a form of social contagion. Almost all planned to commit violent suicide along with mass homicide as their final act.

    • How to treat acute mountain sickness?

A 19-year-old student who lived at sea level drove to approximately 8000 ft (2440 m) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to go skiing. After spending a restless night at altitude, he awoke the next morning with a severe headache. During the day, he felt tired, did not have much appetite, and vomited after attempting to eat lunch. By the next morning, however, he felt better and was able to ski with his friends.
