    • FDA Advisers Recommend Ferring's Fecal Transplant Therapy

A panel of U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisers voted in favor of Ferring Pharmaceuticals' fecal transplant-based therapy to reduce the recurrence of a bacterial infection, bringing the first therapy of its kind closer to approval. The therapy, Rebyota, works by replenishing the good gut bacteria through samples of microbes distilled from faeces of healthy donors, delivered through an enema in this case. Besides Switzerland-based Ferring, other companies including Seres Therapeutics, which is developing an oral treatment, are working on similar therapies based on fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT).

    • Stronger Evidence That Exercise Lowers Breast Cancer Risk

A sedentary lifestyle has already been linked with an increased risk for breast cancer based on data from observational studies, but a new study with different methodology provides stronger evidence of causality. The results of the new study suggest that greater overall physical activity levels, greater vigorous activity, and lower sedentary time are likely to reduce breast cancer risk, say the authors.

    • Exercise, Good Sleep Help Maintain Weight Loss in Obesity

Exercise improves sleep, and together, the two help maintain weight loss in people with obesity, shows a new analysis. Our results show that there are a lot of variables that impact the regain of weight lost, said Signe Torekov, PhD, from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, who presented the findings at the European Congress on Obesity 2022 during a press conference and as a poster. "How you sleep, including sleep quality and duration, should be taken into consideration because it is so difficult to maintain weight loss," she said. Asked to comment, Christopher E. Kline, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, said the findings "do raise the possibility as to whether intervening upon sleep after weight loss would help maintain the weight loss," although he added the results were a secondary analysis of a study, and so causality could not be inferred.

    • RE: 'Healthy' Plant-Based Diet Linked to Reduced Stroke Risk

@ayra Research suggests that plant-based diets reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease, but few studies have examined the effect of these diets on the risk for stroke. Moreover, published research on this question has yielded conflicting results, the researchers note. Two previous investigations showed no association between a vegetarian diet and risk for stroke mortality, but one study found that vegetarian patients were at increased risk for total and hemorrhagic stroke.

    • Teen Cannabis Use May Increase Adult Psychosis Risk

Exposure of adolescents to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component in cannabis, may lead to disturbances in neuronal structure and gene expression in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in adulthood, new research suggests. Using cell type– and layer-specific high-resolution microscopy, dissection aided by laser capture, and next-generation RNA sequencing, investigators examined the impact of THC on the neurodevelopment of exposed adolescent rats through a comparison with control rats. They found that adolescent THC exposure reduced the branching of prefrontal cortical neurons and the number of spines, which are essential for cellular communication.

    • RE: Pathophysiology of Angioid Streaks

@ayra Controversy about the pathophysiology of angioid streaks exists. In some diseases, including pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) and Paget disease, the Bruch membrane may become calcified and brittle with subsequent development of cracks. However, cytoimmunochemistry and x-ray analysis had shown that the earliest abnormality in PXE was abnormal accumulation and metabolism of polyanions (ie, glycosaminoglycans, glycoproteins) within the Bruch membrane. The lines of force within the eye resulting from the pull of intrinsic and extrinsic ocular muscles on the relatively fixed site of the optic nerve have been studied. Those lines of forces had the same configuration as the peripapillary interlacement and radial extensions of angioid streaks. Such forces acting on the Bruch membrane undoubtedly account for the configuration of the breaks. However, in sickle cell disease, Bruch membrane calcification is not a common part of the pathology.

    • RE: Early Egg Introduction Does Not Lower Allergy Risk

@ayra Children were enrolled in STEP between the ages of 4 and 6.5 months. Their mothers had atopy, but the children themselves had no eczema or allergic illness and no previous consumption of egg. They were randomly assigned to receive an intervention (egg) or control (no egg) powder that was mixed into their food. The two preparations were similar in color, smell, texture, and taste and were administered once a day from the time of randomization until the children were 10 months of age. At 10 months of age, parents introduced cooked egg into the diets of all children in both trial groups.

    • RE: Prognosis of Drug-Induced Lupus Erythematosus ??

@ayra Prognosis is excellent once the causative medication is discontinued. Recovery generally occurs within days or weeks. Death from DILE is extremely rare and may result from renal involvement (see Complications). In diagnosing this condition, it is extremely crucial to first exclude the possibility that the patient has renal idiopathic lupus rather than DILE with renal involvement.

    • RE: A person is suffering from chronic asthma, what should be the dietary restriction?

@ayra Some foods contain allergens that can trigger a reaction in some people. Sulfites, for example, are a preservative present in dried fruits and vegetables, pickled foods, shrimp, wine, beer, and some other products.
Eating a lot of sulfites may trigger asthma in some people, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. People with food allergies may find that eating the food they have an allergy to triggers their asthma symptoms.
Obesity can also exacerbate the symptoms of asthma. Staying active and following a diet that is low in fat and high in fruits and vegetables can help people with asthma maintain a moderate body weight.
