Vegan Diet Helps Shed Pounds but Doesn't Dint Diabetes
Following a vegan diet for at least 3 months helped people with overweight or type 2 diabetes shed the pounds, but only had a marginal effect on HbA1c levels, on average, new research indicates. No effect was seen on blood pressure, triglycerides, or the "good" high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. HbA1c was reduced by a mean of –0.18 percentage points (P = .002), and there was a small reduction in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, on average, across all the studies examined in this meta-analysis.

Licking Pacifier to Clean It May Cut Allergy Risk
Licking a pacifier to clean it before giving it to your child might help prevent allergies, according to research presented here at the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting. Parental sucking of the pacifier might transfer health-promoting microbes from parent to child, said Eliane Abou-Jaoude, MD, from the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. She and her colleagues interviewed 128 mothers enrolled in the Microbes, Allergy, Asthma, and Pets (MAAP) birth cohort in the Detroit area. The mothers were recruited to the cohort from January 2014 to August 2016, while they were pregnant. At recruitment, other than some indoor dogs, the allergy risk in participating families matched that of the general population.

Pathophysiology of Cryptococcosis?
Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast. In 1894, Busse, a pathologist, first described the yeast in a paper he presented to the Greifswald Medical Society. Busse isolated the yeast from the tibia of a 31-year-old woman, noted its resistance to sodium hydroxide, and published the case report that same year. The following year, a surgeon named Buschke reported the same isolate from the same patient, thus establishing the early eponym of Busse-Buschke disease. This single case served to identify a new yeast and to prove its pathogenic potential.

RE: Acute porphyria management options?
@manami The management of patients with attacks of AIP can be challenging because the disease manifestations are diverse and potentially life-threatening. Timely intervention can resolve and prevent attacks; any other condition (eg, infection, medication exposure) that may have triggered the acute attack must also be addressed. Close long-term monitoring for complications is also needed.
