    • Brain Imaging Validates Cognitive Problems After Lyme Disease

New imaging data show distinctive brain changes that appear to explain memory and cognitive problems following Lyme disease.

Using fMRI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) techniques, investigators found changes in white matter and other brain tissues in patients with posttreatment Lyme disease (PTLD) in comparison with healthy control persons who did not have a history of the disease.

    • RE: 'Lucid Dying': EEG Backs Near-Death Experience During CPR

@kakali Identifying measurable electrical signs of lucid and heightened brain activity during CPR, coupled with stories of recalled near-death experiences, suggests that the human sense of self and consciousness, much like other biological body functions, may not stop completely around the time of death

    • RE: The Case for Including Optic Nerve Lesions in MS Dx Criteria

@jhilmil At the annual meeting of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS), several speakers made the case for the addition of ONL to the next McDonald revision. Arguments ranged from the inherent injustice that patients with a diagnosis of optic lesions should have to meet three symptoms of MS to get a diagnosis, while other patients require only two, to the possibility that early presentation with ocular symptoms could be an indicator of a more severe prognosis.

    • RE: Cardiorespiratory Fitness Key to Longevity for All?

@koushin Figuring the time was right, the team analyzed data from the VA's Exercise Testing and Health Outcomes Study (ETHOS) on individuals aged 30-95 years who underwent exercise treadmill tests (ETTs) between 1999 and 2020. After exclusions, 750,302 individuals (from among 822,995) were included: 6.5% were women; 73.7% were White individuals; 19% were African American individuals; 4.7% were Hispanic individuals; and 2.1% were Native American, Asian, or Hawaiian individuals. Septuagenarians made up 14.7% of the cohort, and octogenarians made up 3.6%.

    • RE: Eye Changes May Identify Parkinson's Disease

@koushin It has been shown previously that Parkinson's is associated with increased vascular disease in the brain. It could be that we are observing the same changes in the vasculature in the retina. We have seen similar changes in the retinal blood vessels in Alzheimer's but there is more retinal thinning in Alzheimer's disease

    • RE: MIND Diet Preserves Cognition Even in the Presence of Alzheimer's Pathology

@shipra While previous investigations determined that the MIND diet is associated with a slower cognitive decline, the current study furthered the diet and brain health evidence by assessing the impact of brain pathology in the diet-cognition relationship

    • How was C-section delivery evolved?

Cesarean delivery is defined as the delivery of a fetus through surgical incisions made through the abdominal wall (laparotomy) and the uterine wall (hysterotomy). Because the words "cesarean" and "section" are both derived from verbs that mean to cut, the phrase "cesarean section" is a tautology. Consequently, the terms "cesarean delivery" and "cesarean birth" are preferable. Cesarean deliveries were initially performed to separate the mother and the fetus in an attempt to save the fetus of a moribund patient. This operation subsequently developed into a surgical procedure to resolve maternal or fetal complications not amenable to vaginal delivery, either for mechanical limitations or to temporize delivery for maternal or fetal benefit.

    • RE: Child's Death Increases Risk for Brothers or Sisters Dying

@mala Dr Yu, from the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, and colleagues used linked national registers to conduct a population-based cohort study of individuals born from January 1, 1973, through December 31, 2004 (in Denmark), or December 31, 2006 (in Sweden). They studied the brothers and sisters of children who died after the first 6 months of life. The authors excluded 14 children who died within 30 days from the same cause as their siblings, on the likelihood that both children may have been involved in the same accident.

    • Exercise Prescriptions: Working Out as Medicine

Our muscles and fat cells aren't silent bystanders that bulk up or break down in an endless tug of war between food and exercise. They make messenger chemicals that go to parts of the body both near and far. They can turn on and off thousands of genes, raise or lower inflammation, and rev up or slow down metabolism. Physical activity does much more than just strengthen muscles. Moving your body prevents blood vessels from getting damaged and clogged. That helps prevent heart attacks, strokes, and even some types of dementia.
