Hello, I am a 40 years old female. I had copper IUD implantation on Monday, it was obviously a truly horrible, uncomfortable procedure but I felt pretty much normal after. I have mild spotting and cramping. Is it normal to bleed after copper IUD implantation?

@priya-sharma Hello, it is common to experience heavy or irregular bleeding for the first 3-6 months after insertion of the copper IUD. The first few weeks can be the worst for bleeding and cramping and other PMS-like symptoms. You can expect to have some cramps and bleeding/spotting (on and off bleeding or brown discharge) in the first few months but may be worse in the first 1 – 2 weeks. Treat the cramps with ibuprofen or Tylenol. You can expect your regular period to come at its usual time. See your health provider if you experience any of the following:

        • Severe Pelvic Cramps
        • Heavy vaginal bleeding that is outside of your normal flow.
        • You miss your period (on the copper IUD) or think you might be pregnant.
        • Pain with intercourse
