Can doctors tell from the ultrasound that the child has down syndrome?
-
Hello, yesterday I read an article where a renowned actress shared an abortion story. She said that during her first trimester she found out that her child had down syndrome, so she decided to abort it and after that, she fell into depression. I know depression and feelings of loss are normal after things like abortion but my question is Can doctors tell from the ultrasound that the child has down syndrome? Is it possible to know?

@ishaa Hello, Yes. A person who has Down syndrome is born with an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. It’s detected at birth. It also can be detected during pregnancy with genetic testing. A blood test and an ultrasound test during the first trimester of pregnancy. This is the most accepted approach for screening during the first trimester. An ultrasound can detect fluid at the back of a fetus's neck, which sometimes indicates Down syndrome.
