What causes acanthosis nigricans?
Hello, Yesterday I noticed Dark patches of skin with a thick, velvety texture on my uncle’s elbow. When I asked what it is he said it’s acanthosis nigricans. He is 48 years old. Can anyone tell me what causes it?
@brandon Acanthosis nigricans skin patches occur when epidermal skin cells begin to reproduce rapidly. It could be caused by the following factors:-
- Hormonal changes- People with hormonal disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Too much insulin- The most frequent trigger for acanthosis nigricans is an excess of insulin in your bloodstream
Acanthosis nigricans is a relatively common skin disorder characterized by patches of dark, thick, and velvety skin that has associations with being overweight and diabetes.
