Acute eosinophilic pneumonia- what are the treatment options?
-
21years old lady is suffering from respiratory distress. According to the patient, she had exertional dyspnoea for the preceding 2 days that was associated with non-productive cough. Pertinent positives were a low grade fever, nausea, vomiting and non-bloody diarrhea for 2 days prior to presentation. She had a history of allergy to wasps and used her epinephrine auto-injector without significant improvement in her dyspnoea. She has been diagnosed with acute eosinophilic pneumonia. What is the treatment regime for this condition?
-
@jack Some patients with acute eosinophilic pneumonia improve spontaneously. Most are treated with prednisone 40 to 60 mg orally once a day. In patients with respiratory failure, methylprednisolone 60 to 125 mg IV every 6 hours is preferred. The prognosis of acute eosinophilic pneumonia is usually good; response to corticosteroids and complete recovery are common. Pleural effusions resolve more slowly than parenchymal opacities.
