Hello, Is HbA1c a better test for diabetics? For people without diabetes, the normal range for the hemoglobin A1c level is between 4% and 5.6%. Hemoglobin A1c levels between 5.7% and 6.4% mean you have prediabetes and a higher chance of getting diabetes. Please explain this elaborately. I need to understand this.

@manisha The hba1c is an important reflection of glucose control over a three month period. It gives some guidance as to long-term glucose levels which otherwise change greatly over a day. Glycosylated hemoglobin is due to a covalent bond between glucose and beta chain of haemoglobin. Its percentage is the percentage of glycosylated haemoglobin as of total hemoglobin. The amount is proportional to glucose levels over about 6 weeks. Hba1c of more than 8% requires pharmaco therapeutic management rather than dietary alone. However it is to be kept in mind that hba1c estimates may be less useful in anaemia, pregnancy, uremia and hemoglobinopathies.
