Hello, a few weeks back my 2 years old was suffering from croup. He is currently on medication and I am also following instructions given by the doctor making sure he is hydrated. I didn’t hear about croup before it happened to my son. Please let me know what is croup and what triggers it?

@indisha Hello, Croup refers to an infection of the upper airway, which obstructs breathing and causes a characteristic barking cough. Croup usually affects young children aged between six months and three years, with most cases occurring in one-year-olds. Croup is usually caused by a viral infection, most often a parainfluenza virus. The infection causes the larynx to become swollen and the trachea to become blocked, and may affect the tubes in the lungs. It is sometimes called laryngotracheobronchitis. Croup is caused by other viruses like flu viruses (influenza A and B), the rhinovirus, and enteroviruses. It is also caused by an allergic reaction to substances such as pollen or dust mites and inhalation of irritants, such as chemicals.
