What is an ectopic pregnancy?

Hello, My sister had an operation as she had an ectopic pregnancy. The doctor said it can put at her risk if it is not treated. She had severe pain low down and on one side of her abdomen and was sweating a lot. We took this decision immediately as she was in severe pain. Please tell me what is an ectopic pregnancy? Can an ectopic pregnancy be prevented?

@pamela An ectopic pregnancy most often occurs in a fallopian tube, which carries eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilized egg develops outside the womb. If an egg implants in one of the fallopian tubes, it can't develop into a baby. You took the right decision, An ectopic pregnancy can't proceed normally. An ectopic pregnancy can cause your fallopian tube to burst open. The fertilized egg can't survive, and the growing tissue may cause life-threatening bleeding if left untreated.
Unfortunately, there's no way to prevent an ectopic pregnancy but a few things like Limiting the number of sexual partners, not smoking, and using a condom during sex can reduce the risk.
