Many women experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS) a week or two before their periods. This can leave them feeling irritable, upset, nervous, and anxious. It’s estimated that three to eight percent of women suffer more severely from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD.) This can lead to severe depression, fatigue, and panic attacks. What causes mental breakdowns during and before periods?

@nermina The levels of estrogen and progesterone are low during this time. Low levels of estrogen have an effect on the chemicals the brain releases. Studies have highlighted that low levels of estrogen are linked to low serotonin. Mood symptoms are only present for a specific period of time, during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Symptoms emerge one to two weeks before menses and resolve completely with the onset of menstruation. The hormonal changes during your menstrual cycle may affect your mental health but your mental health may also have an impact on your menstrual cycle.
