Does glomerulonephritis cause periorbital edema?
-
Hello, Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of the tiny filters in the kidneys. The excess fluid and waste that glomeruli remove from the bloodstream exit the body as urine. Glomerulonephritis can come acute or chronic. Severe or prolonged inflammation associated with glomerulonephritis can damage the kidneys. My grandfather suffers from the same and has swelling or puffiness around the eyes. Is it because of glomerulonephritis? Does glomerulonephritis cause periorbital edema?

@dhenu-0 Hello, Yes Puffiness of the eyelids (periorbital edema) is typical for the nephritic syndrome. You might have noticed it is most prominent in the morning and tends to resolve at the end of the day. Edema is also a common feature. Moreover, in severe cases, patients with glomerulonephritis might experience respiratory distress as a result of pulmonary edema. They may experience other non-specific symptoms like anorexia, malaise, nausea, vomiting, etc.
