Hello, I am 28 years old female. I have a unilateral cleft lip and palate. I am planning to get pregnant but am scared of passing on the deformity to my baby. What are the chances of this nightmare becoming true? Is there anything I can do before pregnancy to avoid this for my baby? Please help. I am super nervous. Please suggest if I can do anything?

@eliita Hello, A cleft palate or cleft lip is a birth condition in which parts of the mouth do not join up during early fetal development. The cause is unknown, although genetic factors sometimes play a role. A cleft lip or cleft palate is not caused by anything the parents did or did not do during the pregnancy. A parent who was born with a cleft lip or a cleft palate has a small chance of passing on the condition to their child. But around two-thirds of cases have no known family history or cause. Even the healthiest, well-planned pregnancies can result in a cleft, and this is no one’s fault.
