Does jaggery help in weight loss? Should I replace sugar with jaggery?
-
Hello, Replacing sugar with jaggery good or not? Should I replace sugar with jaggery? I am 19 years old with PCOS. I gained a lot of weight because of PCOS and trying to lose some weight. When asked my friend she said Jaggery is sugar but isn't refined like white sugar. If you have access to it, use it. But it is still a sugar and has calories and a high glycemic index. What should I do? Is she right? Please suggest!! Should I replace sugar with jaggery be helpful?

@mapriya Hello, Both sugar and jaggery are made from sugarcane juice. But, they are processed differently. Sugar syrup is treated with charcoal to provide it with a transparent look and create sugar. At the end of the industrial process, sugar is left with only plain sucrose. However, jaggery does not go through such a process. It is definitely less processed and therefore its nutritional value is more than the sugar. The former contains traces of mineral salts, iron, and fiber. Sugar has calories with zero nutritional value. Whereas, jaggery is known to have a plethora of benefits due to its rich nutritional value. Having jaggery after a meal has been found to help in better digestion. Also, it helps you flush out toxins from the body and relax respiratory muscles too. Jaggery is a complex sugar, made up of long chains of sucrose. The body takes time to digest it, and the energy is released slowly. . If you have a great metabolism, you will be able to burn fats faster. Jaggery can boost your metabolic rate and help manage body weight.
