Hello, I am 41 years old woman. Can anyone tell me how long it takes for Calcium Supplements to start working? And at what intervals should I have the bone density test done? Two weeks back my doctor prescribed calcium supplements and said it will ease my pain. I haven't seen any difference. Can anyone tell me how long it to start working? At what intervals should I have the bone density test done?

@apina Hello, Restoration of bone density is a slow process. if you have bone density issues, calcium will take 6 weeks to make a difference, and calcium needs a lot of other things for your body to truly absorb and reap the benefits. Generally, a follow-up bone density scan can be done one or two years after calcium supplementation has been started. At normal doses, calcium supplements may cause bloating, gas, and constipation. Calcium supplementation should contain some vitamin D also to help improve calcium absorption from the GI tract. If you are taking medication for osteoporosis, expect to have a bone density test every 1 to 2 years. Your doctor may suggest that you get a bone density test every 2 years, especially for women during or after menopause.
