Hello, can anyone tell me Why do I get more painful periods in winter? My periods are more painful in cold weather as compared to hot weather. During cold weather, I often take painkillers for my lower abdomen cramps and even a hot water bag to treat cramps. During hot weather pain is slightly less I don’t need to take painkillers. It gets better with a hot water bag. Does weather affect period pain?

@bie Hello, yes, Seasonal changes can take a toll on your menstrual cycles. Being exposed to cold(including sitting on cold surfaces and swimming in cold water) during menstruation can constrict the free flow and cause cramps to worsen. There's scientific evidence that periods can be more intense and uncomfortable during the winter months due to the impact of seasonal changes on the body. In cold weather Blood vessels constrict in the cold, reducing blood flow. If the blood flow from your period is interrupted, it could increase period pain. Hormonal changes and a lack of sunlight could also be the reason for seasonal menstrual changes. To avoid changes in menstruation cycles during cold weather, it is important to soak up as much sunlight as possible on sunny days. Consuming foods with vitamin D can also help compensate for the lack of sunlight and thus regularize the menstrual cycle. If you are having painful periods please consult a gynecologist.
