Alcohol consumption and liver cirrhosis- are they linked?
Hello, I am 18 years old. I have many friends who drink alcohol. But one day I also had beer. Recently I got to know that one distant relative of mine has been diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. I am worried that I may also get the disease. Doctor told him that he has only few days left. Are alcohol consumption and liver cirrhosis linked ? Please help me with your information.
@tanisha Alcohol is a major risk factor for liver disease in general, and for liver cirrhosis in particular. In fact, about half of the liver cirrhosis burden of morbidity and mortality would disappear in a world without alcohol. However, risks varied widely and the analysis of case-control studies showed no risk increase for consumption of 1–4 drinks per day. So if you had beer for once, it will not precipitate into liver cirrhosis. No need to worry. However continued high consumption will definitely lead to liver cirrhosis.
