According to the researchers, 20.5% of women with osteoporosis, as well as 16.4% of women in the control group, were diagnosed with dementia within 20 years of the index date (P < .001). Among men, 22% of patients with osteoporosis, and 14.9% of those in the control group, were diagnosed with dementia (P < .001). Are these findings true? Is there a link between osteoporosis and dementia?

@eiv Possible association between osteoarthritis and increased risk for dementia. Frequent age-related comorbidities and physical inactivity in osteoarthritis patients increase risk for Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and cognitive impairment. Dementia and osteoporosis have similar risk factors, which is the likely explanation for this finding. However, these findings should alert health care providers caring for an osteoporotic patient to assess for signs and symptoms of dementia, and refer for screening if suspected. Early identification of dementia may improve outcomes overall. These findings should be studied further in order to optimize the care of this population.
