Can weightlifting cause carpal tunnel syndrome?
-
Hello, both men and women who engage in weightlifting, bodybuilding, and CrossFit training regimens develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I have been doing weight lifting exercises since last year I am worried. Will weight lifting exercises eventually cause carpal tunnel syndrome? Please help.

@nujh Lifting elevated levels of weights with a tight grip, over and over, creates an intense kind of repetitive stress on the hand and wrist area. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by the compression of the median nerve at the base of the hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome is an orthopaedic condition and should be diagnosed by an orthopedic surgeon or a hand specialist. The doctor will conduct a medical examination and may also order some diagnostic or imaging tests to assess the condition of the hand. The surgeon may also ask you questions or perform a physical diagnosis to assess the sensations and functioning of the wrist and hand, ask about your medical history, and analyze your daily lifestyle and symptoms. Daily exercise helps to stimulate flexible arteries and veins which are key to healthy blood circulation in the extremities of the body, like the hand and wrist areas. Take precautions while weight lifting exercises to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. Thanks!
